The Land of Umpqua

This truly distinctive river canyon landscape is characterized by the combination of clear jade green rushing water, towering vertical rock cliffs and spires, all within a mosaic of mountain meadows and dense Douglas Fir/Western Hemlock forests. Adding to the natural scenic quality of the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic Corridor are the locations of numerous prominent geologic features. These features include columnar basalt, large basalt rock cliffs, boulders, and spires; all of which are currently managed as the Umpqua Rocks Special Geologic Area. Few river systems in the region expose as much of the volcanic and geologic history of the formation of the Cascades in one nearly straight, east-west direction. Be sure to check out the Umpqua natural hot springs and a plethora of favorite local waterfalls; including, Watson Falls (southern Oregon's highest), Toketee Falls, Steamboat Falls, Lemolo Falls and many more. Maps are available for download on the Attractions page.

Sports & Recreation

The area is readily accessible to a broad segment of the population and provides a vast variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. This includes non-motorized boating activities, whitewater rafting, fly fishing, rock climbing, snorkeling, swimming, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and scenic tours. Highway 138 the Rogue-Umpqua scenic byway serves as the primary access to Crater Lake National Park, The North Umpqua River, 79 mile long North Umpqua Trail (which intersects the Pacific Crest Trail), and game hunting/fishing  including high concentration of native steelhead and fishery stock. Visitors from all over the world travel through the Umpqua National Forest to enjoy these and more outdoor recreation and sporting destination activities. Known as the “Emerald-Jewel Gateway”, it has received both regional and national recognition for its exceptional scenic quality and accessibility to a myriad of recreational and interpretive opportunities
