High Cascades glaciation, whitewater rapids and explosive volcanic events have shaped the spectacular scenery and abundant natural resources of the Umpqua National Forest.


Crater Lake National Park

There are more than 90 miles of one-way and loop trails, including 33 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail as well as hikes up Mount Scott, Garfield Peak, and Crater Peak. It is also possible to hike to the lake surface on the Cleetwood Trail. of Crater Lake National Park. These are usually snow-free from mid-July to early-October. Just over 90% of the park is managed as wilderness, though these areas have yet to be designated as such. A permit is required for all overnight trips.

Hiking Attractions

There is unlimited hiking potential in the area including the Pacific Crest Trail, The North Umpqua Trail, and The Umpqua National Forest covers nearly one million acres located along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in southwest Oregon. The Forest encompasses a diverse area of rugged mountains to 9,200 feet in elevation, sparkling rivers and lakes, and deep canyons, producing a wealth of water resources, timber, wildlife, fish habitat, minerals, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Included within the Forest are the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River, a portion of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, three wilderness areas, the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, and the Diamond Lake Recreation Composite, one of the largest developed recreational facilities within the Forest Service.


Winter Recreation

The Snow is great in the North Umpqua, with Diamond Lake Winter Recreational Area just a half hour north of the park. There are hundreds of miles of Snowmobile trails and play areas. The best part is we are below the snow line so you don't have to camp in it. There are however... exceptions to that rule...

Winter Activites

Snowmobiling is the most popular winter sport at Diamond Lake. The sport has enjoyed tremendous growth, both in participants and technology of the machines. Today's snowmobiles are safe, dependable, and easy to ride, even for the first time operator.

Diamond Lake Resort grooms the north entrance to Crater Lake National Park. The 20 mile trip to the North Rim Overlook is an easy trail to ride. Once there, you are treated to one of the most spectacular views in the world. They offer guided tours or you can ride your own sled there. Please remember, inside the National Park do not ride off the groomed trails.

They offer guided tours on Saturday and Sunday, and with advance reservations Monday - Friday. They also offer do-it-yourself" half and all day rentals available any day of the week.

Located on the summit of Oregon's Cascade Mountains, just five miles north of Crater Lake National Park, Cat Ski Mt Bailey is  now operated by Diamond Lake Resort and is Oregon's longest running back country snowcat skiing adventure. Mt. Bailey offers 6000 acres of ungroomed backcountry skiing. 12 skiers, and/or board riders, lead by guides, challenge 15,000 to 18,000 vertical feet each day of avalanche chutes, technical timbered runs, and open bowls. If your skills are dialed, Mt. Bailey is the place to be.
